If you’ve been outside in Oakland lately, you know things are heating up. Memorial day has come and gone, and so has the chilly spring weather with it. Now it’s time to take a breath and chill in the summer season, aka Ice Cream season. Let’s talk about the best 10 places you can hit up for a summer cool down:
1. Fentons Creamery
We have to start with this Oakland landmark on Piedmont Avenue. It’s a family owned retro soda fountain style restaurant. It genuinely is world famous, as it’s been featured on the Food Network, the Travel Channel, and the History Channel! Have you seen the Pixar movie Up? Carl and Russell couldn’t pass up a summer treat at Fentons! Get one of their house made signature sundaes! Try the Black and Tan sundae. Melvin Fenton himself invented the toasted almond flavor in this delightful dish!
2. Cookiebar Creamery
If you find yourself in Old Oakland, make a quick stop at the Cookiebar Creamery. Not only does it have a catchy name, the flavors are irresistible with unique tastes such as fruity pebbles, Thai Tea, Ube and all the classic flavors such as Vanilla, Cookies and Cream, and Rocky Road! Get your scoop on a cone, in a bowl, or squished between two freshly baked cookies!
3. Sweet Belly
If you’re looking for some made-from-scratch soft serve ice cream, this Uptown ice cream place will hit the spot. Not only can you choose from all the different toppings, but you can also add mini – donuts to your order. This place offers delicious and Instagram worthy cold treats.
4. Humphry Slocombe
This is your spot, located on Broadway, for the most odd, yet delightful ice cream flavors such as Peanut Butter Curry, Government Cheese, and Carrot Mango Sorbet. The founders Jake Godby & Sean Vahey say, “Welcome to our bizarre, delicious, frozen universe.” Welcome, indeed.
5. Smitten Ice Cream
As the name predicts, you will be smitten with this ice cream after the first bite. This Rockridge neighborhood spot has a pretty unconventional and personalized method of making your ice cream. Community is the top priority for this Uptown Ice Cream stop. All the ingredients are made from scratch and locally sourced from Clover Stornetta Farms. Their flavor options are chosen by customer demand! Come for a scoop and that feel good simple, honest, easy atmosphere that makes you nostalgic for those summer days as a kid.

Curbside Creamery offers a more rustic, artisanal vibe served up along with your scoops. They specialize in a “gourmet take” on classic ice cream flavors, for example, bourbon whiskey vanilla. It’s ice cream for the refined pallet. Try out their offerings of cashew based vegan ice cream as well!
10. Lush Gelato
You can find Lush in three different locations in the Bay, the first opened in Oakland on Piedmont Avenue in 2009. The specialty here is the glorious flavors created by gelato genius and Lush’s owner, Frederico Murtagh, who pulls inspiration from his native Argentinian background. When you go in for a scoop, you will always be welcomed by a friendly face offering recommendations and tastes of the many different Gelato flavors made in small batches.
