ama Oakland is a love letter to the old-school Italian-American grandmother, and it's earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for the effort. The premise is simple and generous: a reasonably priced three-course dinner, served nightly, with a couple of choices per course that change with the season. The constant is the house-made pasta dressed in a slow-braised pork-and-beef sugo — the dish that inspired the whole place. Set just off Grand Avenue near Lake Merritt (and next to the owners' Bay Grape wine shop), the room is warm and chic, with a genuinely great wine list. A standout for date night. Reservations strongly recommended.
